Sales Success with MileGate

KC, a part of the KCOM Group PLC, chooses KEYMILE’s MileGate Next Generation Multiservice Access Solution to deliver high speed broadband to the village of Walkington in East Yorkshire.

KC has increased broadband performance in Walkington from just over 1 Mbps to around 15 Mbps by deploying a FTTC (Fibre-to-the-Cabinet) solution from KEYMILE, a leading manufacturer of Next-Generation data transmission systems.

With its hybrid system architecture, the multi-service access platform MileGate supports simultaneous provision of traditional and IP services from one single network element. This allows network operators to continue to offer traditional telephony with broadband services and migrate to a NGN (Next Generation Network) architecture at the same time.

MileGate has a variety of electrical (xDSL, telephony) and optical user interfaces and can operate in an extended temperature range providing faster and more reliable xDSL services from street cabinets or the central office.

It adds up to an evolutionary development of networks. With this level of flexibility, in addition to installations in exchanges with thousands of subscriber lines, a variety of FTTx network architectures can be supported.

By extending fibre from the local exchange to a street-based cabinet solution, the problem of long local loops and poor performance has been resolved. The original copper cable ran over 4 miles to the local exchange at Beverley and therefore was not capable of delivering a high performance broadband solution.

By entering the copper loop nearer the residence and with KEYMILE’s ADSL2plus technology, it has been possible to overcome the weaknesses of these long copper lines.

KEYMILE and KC worked closely together to model and verify the new service before going live recently. KEYMILE’s experience in outdoor solutions, both for telecommunications operators and in the industrial marketplace, was invaluable in making the project a success. KEYMILE was chosen not only because of the support and experience they could contribute, but because the technology did exactly ‘what it said on the tin’.

While providing a solution to resolve today’s problems, the platform has the flexibility for low cost migration to newer technologies, such as VDSL2 and Fibre to the Home, to provide even higher speeds as applications and services to homes or businesses demand it.
